Steam can kill bed bugs and eggs when enough heat reaches them. Health Canada also states the main limitation: steam kills only the bugs it reaches. Seams, joints and exposed surfaces can be treated, while deep voids and enclosed spaces may remain untouched.
Heat at the treated surface determines the result; the temperature printed on the machine does not. How much heat reaches a hiding place changes with the attachment, working distance, movement speed and material.
Steam can kill every bed bug life stage it reaches
The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, develops through egg, nymph and adult stages. Heat can kill each stage at the point of contact. Health Canada identifies 50°C as lethal to bed bugs, but that threshold does not describe every machine setup or material.
Eggs can also be killed, though their placement inside seams and folds can shield them. Survival is possible when too little heat reaches the hiding place. The same limit applies inside furniture joints and behind inaccessible surfaces.
Contact kill describes the result for a bug or egg reached during a pass. It does not report what happened elsewhere in the room. Any performance statement should match the machine, test method and conditions recorded in the relevant certificate.
Surface temperature determines the result
Three readings describe three different points
A steamer can have several temperature readings:
- Boiler temperature refers to the water inside the machine.
- Outlet temperature is measured where steam leaves the outlet or tool.
- Treated-surface temperature is taken on the fabric, seam or joint after heat has travelled through the hose, attachment, air gap and material.
Boiler and outlet specifications help compare machines, but they do not show the temperature at a mattress seam or couch joint.
Check the full treated zone
An infrared thermometer can check an area immediately after a pass. Take readings across the full zone and record the lowest stable result instead of selecting the hottest point. Keep the measuring distance and angle consistent.
Infrared readings also have limits. Reflective finishes and textured fabrics can affect the result, while thick materials may hide cooler layers below the face. A surface reading cannot confirm the temperature inside foam, a closed joint or the back of an upholstered panel.
Distance, output, attachment width, movement speed and material all change the delivered heat. Record these conditions with the measured temperature. A number without its setup gives too little information to repeat the result safely.
Dry vapor leaves less residual moisture
Dry vapor carries little residual water, but fabric may still become damp. Lower moisture can shorten drying time and reduce the amount of liquid left in seams. Each material still needs a test patch and enough time to dry.

A broad triangular or rectangular attachment spreads steam across a wider band. Overlapping passes are easier to track, with less force concentrated at one point. With a narrow nozzle, the force is focused into a smaller area, so use only attachments and working distances approved for the machine.
Thin fabric warms differently from dense upholstery. Folds, foam and furniture joints can absorb heat or shield deeper layers, so movement speed has to match the surface being treated.
Work through reachable harbourages in a set order
Prepare the area
Harbourages are seams, joints and cracks where bed bugs shelter. Expose mattress seams, tufts, couch seams, bed frame joints, baseboards and accessible cracks before starting. Keep outlets, powered equipment and heat-sensitive materials outside the planned path.

Treat one small zone at a time
Divide each item into manageable sections and finish one before moving on. Use slow, overlapping passes at the distance stated for the machine. The time needed will vary with output, tool width and material, so a single duration cannot apply to every surface.
Some hiding places and materials should not be steamed
Thick upholstery, enclosed furniture spaces, wall cavities and inaccessible cracks can shelter bugs beyond the treated face. A hot outer surface reports only the heat at that face. Recurring signs around walls, shared service routes or adjoining rooms call for a wider inspection by a licensed pest-control professional.
Leather, delicate textiles, painted finishes, laminates, adhesives and foam may change under heat, pressure or moisture. Start with an inconspicuous patch and follow the material-care label. Any visible change is a reason to stop.
Steam also creates burn, moisture, mould and electrical risks. Keep it away from outlets, energized equipment and electrical openings.
Bed bug activity in an apartment, condominium or hotel may extend beyond one room. Property management and a pest professional should coordinate inspection when signs recur across rooms or appear on both sides of a unit boundary.
Purpose-built systems differ from garment steamers
Compare operating performance
Tank size, recovery time, output stability and residual moisture shape a long treatment pass. A purpose-built dry vapor system may hold steadier output and leave less water than a small garment steamer, but the label alone does not establish suitability.

Steam works best as one part of the control plan
Health Canada places steam inside a combined response that also uses physical control and prevention. Depending on the room and infestation, the plan may include laundering, vacuuming, a mattress encasement and monitoring.
Repeat work should respond to inspection evidence rather than a fixed calendar. The treatment record can reveal missed areas, while later signs show where another pass may belong.
A licensed pest-control professional should assess recurring activity, signs across several rooms or units, inaccessible harbourages, electronics and building voids. Registered pesticides or occupant health concerns also warrant professional advice.

How long should you steam an area to kill bed bugs?
No single duration fits every setup. Follow the machine instructions and move slowly enough to overlap each pass. Confirm the coldest part of the treated zone because output, attachment width, distance and material all affect heating time.
Can bed bug eggs survive steam?
They can. Eggs survive when the pass misses them or delivers too little heat. A treated-surface check is more useful than the machine rating.
